This thematic issue of Tijdschrift voor Geschiedenis goes beyond traditional views of the Empire as a ‘trading enterprise’, and argues that the Dutch empire, like all other empires, was a territorially expanding state that faced challenges regarding sovereignty, subjection and belonging across the globe.
